Founded in 1958, Fujian University of Traditional Chinese Medicine (FJTCM) is one of the earliest established TCM universities in China. It is also a key university and a “First-Class” construction university of Fujian province.
FJTCM consists of 13 colleges(departments) and 2 research institutes, with 2 first level disciplines for Doctoral candidates, 7 first level disciplines for Master candidates, 4 categories of Professional Master's Degree, 2 centers for post-doctoral studies and 19 specialties for undergraduates, such as TCM, Acupuncture and Massage, Clinical Integrative Medicine, Clinical Medicine, TCM Pharmacology, Pharmacology, Pharmaceutical Engineering, Marketing, Pharmaceutics, Nursing, Public Utilities Management, Medical Imaging, Applied Psychology, Food Science & Engineering, Physical Therapy, and Occupational Therapy. At present, the total enrollment of full-time students is more than 14,000, including over 2,700 postgraduates.
The number of staff of the university (including 4 directly affiliated hospitals) is more than 6,000, among which about 1000 are professional and technical personnel with senior titles. There is an academician of International Eurasian Academy of Sciences, a national TCM master, 3 national famous TCM doctors, 2 Qihuang Scholars of National TCM Inheritance and Innovation Hundreds and Thousands of Talents Project (Qihuang Project), 2 winners of “National TCM Outstanding Contributions Award”, 6 members of the Teaching Steering Committee of the Ministry of Education (including 1 vice chairman of TCM teaching steering committee, and 1 vice chairman of integrative medicine teaching steering committee). There is also a group of talents of National Hundreds and Thousands of Talents Project, national young and middle-aged experts with outstanding contributions, experts enjoying special allowance from the State Council, instructors to the heir of the national veteran TCM experts, National Top 100 Outstanding Young TCM Doctors, and National Outstanding Teachers.
In 2002 and 2007, FJTCM got “A” level in the undergraduate education evaluation conducted by the Ministry of Education. In December 2010, FJTCM passed the evaluation conducted by the Ministry of Education on the Pilot Degree Program of Traditional Chinese Medicine. In 2016, FJTCM passed the audit assessment of undergraduate education, the physical therapist professional entry level education program was awarded accreditation by the World Confederation for Physical Therapy, and the occupational therapy program was evaluated and approved by the World Federation of Occupational Therapists. In May 2017, FJTCM passed the evaluation conducted by the Ministry of Education on the Degree Program of TCM Pharmacology. In March 2019, FJTCM passed the evaluation conducted by the Ministry of Education on the Degree Program of Nursing. In March 2020, FJTCM passed the evaluation conducted by the Ministry of Education on the Degree Program of Clinical Medicine. At present, there are 8 national first-class undergraduate programs, 4 national characteristic specialties, 1 national pilot program for comprehensive reform, 2 national pilot projects for the cultivation of outstanding TCM doctors,1 national Innovation Experimental Field for Talents Cultivation, 1 national off-campus practical educational base for college students, 3 national quality courses, 2 national quality open video courses, 3 national quality resources sharing courses, 1 national bilingual demonstration course, 2 national teaching faculties, 133 provincial undergraduate teaching projects, and 178 national & provincial projects of innovation and entrepreneurship training for college students. The university edited 60 planned textbooks for the “Twelfth Five-Year Plan” “Thirteenth Five-Year Plan” and “Fourteenth Five-Year Plan”, and won 1 national first prize, 2 national second prizes, 5 provincial special prizes, 12 provincial first prizes, and 14 provincial second prizes on teaching achievements.
There are 20 ministry-level key disciplines of the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine (SATCM), 2 provincial Class-A peak disciplines (Integrative Medicine and TCM), 3 provincial plateau disciplines (TCM Pharmacy, Nursing and Pharmacy),and 2 provincial application-oriented disciplines (Clinical Medicine and Management). The discipline of Clinical Medicine entered the ESI global top 1%. FJTCM has 2 National-Local Joint Engineering Research Centers, 1 key laboratory of Ministry of Education, 1 TCM Rehabilitation Research Center of SATCM, 3 Key Laboratories of SATCM, 8 national top-level laboratories, 1 TCM Literature Retrieval Center of SATCM, 4 provincial “2011 collaborative innovation centers”,2 provincial big data institutes, and 18 provincial key laboratories, bases & engineering research centers. FJTCM successively received 743 national and provincial awards for the scientific achievements, including 1 second prize of National Science and Technology Progress Award, and 1 second prize of Science and Technology Progress Award of the Ministry of Education. The university further promoted scientific innovation, increased investment on research, and undertook 2736 research projects, among which 166 are national ones, such as national research projects, including projects supported by National Key Technology R & D Program, projects supported by National Basic Research Program (973 Program), programs of National Natural Science Foundation, “TCM modernization research” key projects of National key research and development plan, projects supported by the Joint Funds of Cross-Straits Scientific Cooperation, national social science fund projects, key & major projects supported by National Major New Drug Creation Program.
FJTCM has established a comprehensive system for clinical teaching and practice with 4 directly affiliated hospitals, among which the Affiliated Rehabilitation Hospital is the first rehabilitation hospital in China that has been awarded a CARF accreditation, 11 non-directly affiliated hospitals, 10 clinical colleges, and more than 100 bases for teaching and clinical practices. There are 8 national key subjects (rehabilitation, anus-intestine, spleen & stomach, surgery, etc.), 17 ministry-level key subjects of SATCM. The university also set up Guoyitang Clinic in Pingshan Campus to provide medical service to the public.
FJTCM has 2 campuses and occupies an area of about 68.67 hectares with a floor space of over 340,000 square meters. The value of teaching and research apparatus is more than 400 million yuan and there are 1.38 million paper books and 1.01 million e-books in the library. The university has excellent facilities, equipped with modern teaching, researching and living facilities, and has built a cultural landscape reflecting TCM culture. Because of its graceful environment, rich and vibrant campus life with TCM characteristics, the university has been awarded the Nation Pioneer Unit on TCM Culture Construction, the National Verdurization Model Unit, and has been consecutively entitled Civilized Campus for seven times by Fujian provincial committee & government. FJTCM promotes the construction of a conservation-oriented campus, and was identified as the first batch of National Conservation Oriented Demonstration Unit of Public Institutions, and won the honorary title of Energy Efficiency Leader of Public Institutions in the country.
FJTCM is the first TCM university in the mainland to enroll Taiwan students and is the first to build the province’s overseas TCM center “China-Philippines TCM Center”. At present, there are more than 300 overseas students, and alumni in Australia, the United States, Southeast Asia, and China’s Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Macao have become the backbone of the local TCM community. So far, the university has held 12 Cross-Strait Symposium on Traditional Chinese Medicine. FJTCM has established a multi-level and multi-form education framework for Taiwan students including PhD, Master, Bachelor degree programs and short-term training program. FJTCM has also established cooperation with universities and relevant institutions from the United States, Australia, Germany, Malaysia, Sweden, Finland, Demark, and China’s Taiwan, Hong Kong, etc.
In the new phase of development, guided by Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era, the university will stick to the school motto of “Pursue Excellence, Strive For Perfection”, keep up with developments and changes constantly and make every effort to build the university into a high-level, distinctive and first-class TCM university, which specializes mainly in TCM and develops in other disciplines coordinately.
